All schools identified as “in need of improvement” must use their federal funds to improve. They are required to submit a formal plan the State Department of Education for approval. In the event of continued poor performance parents have options to ensure their children receive the high-quality education they are entitled.
Parents in Title I schools identified as “in need of improvement” are offered the following options:
-
Public School Choice: a transfer to a school within the district which has made adequate yearly progress (AYP). To view CT's Public School Choice Guide for Students and Families please visit this website: http://www.state.ct.us/sde/equity/Choice/schoolchoice2006.pdf
-
Supplemental Educational Services (SES), or out-of-school help must be offered to parents in the second year after the school has been determined “in need of improvement”. For a complete list of SES providers in CT please visit this website: http://www.csde.state.ct.us/public/cedar/nclb/psc_ses/resources/ses/SES_approved_providers_06-07_revised_sept06.pdf
Although all schools will be subject to the AYP analysis and identification, only those identified schools and districts receiving Title I funds will be subject to specific consequences outlined above. To learn if your child’s school is a Title I recipient, visit www.csde.state.ct.us/public/der/nclb/title1.htm
