Events and Opportunities for Parent Advisors
Next STEPs Parent Advisors are encouraged to continue to stay up-to-date on news and special education laws by attending trainings and events. CPAC also has opportunities for Parent Advisors to use their knowledge and experience to help others. Occasionally, these events are open to the public, however Parent Advisors are given priority when space is limited.
Volunteer Opportunity: IEP Clinic
CPAC organizes IEP clinics to review IEPs one-on-one with families. Parent Advisor volunteers are needed for this one-on-one support. For more information, please contact Jane Hampton-Smith at 1-800-445-2722 or jhampton@cpacinc.org.
Child Find Awareness
The State Department of Education has identified Child Find as an area of concern. In order to assist families in getting their children identified appropriately and in a timely manner, CPAC has created a packet of information for professionals to share with families. We are looking for Parent Advisors who are willing to bring a packet to someone in their community. It should be given to a provider personally with a brief explanation. Pediatricians, private therapists; OTs, PTs, SLPs, early childhood providers, mental health clinicians and anyone who may work with families with children with special needs are the target audience. These people may make a referral to the school district and need to know their role in this. We can help prepare you for how you would review the packet and its contents with a professional. If you are willing to bring this packet to someone you know please call for us to send you one, or more.
ADHD Awareness
CPAC has revised our training called Understanding ADHD. We are looking for parents or providers who would like to organize a presentation in their community for at least 10 participants. Please contact us for details if this is of interest to you. Other topics are also available.
